The History of 1911
To understand the gun, it is essential to know how it came to be! John Moses Browning is the inventor of the 1911 semi-automatic pistol. Some people see him as a genius within the world of weapons. Some even go as far as crowning him one of the most legendary inventors to ever live on this Earth.
That’s because between 1879 and 1926 he came up with some of the most successful and popular firearms, which includes 1911, the Browning Automatic Rifle, the Browning Hi-Power handgun, and the massive machine M2 Browning. The last one is still a standard for heavy machinery of the armed forces of the U.S. It is essential to be familiar with the definitions of some firearm types if you want to know what a massive machine is.
Both .45 ACP and 1911 pistol were developed based on the American soldiers experience during their war in the Philippines. The Army adopted the 1911 model just in time for World War I. This gun proved itself as a powerful handgun and an excellent asset for the American Expeditionary Forces.
After this big war, the gun went through a lot of adjustments, which were with the idea to make 1911 easier to shoot. The new version came to be known as 1911A1, and it has new features such as scalloping for the trigger housing, more full sights, and longer safety spur. It is exciting to see the development of the model 1911 Pistol, isn’t it?
Meanwhile, during the interwar time, this version started gaining popularity not only with the military but also with the gangsters. One of those men was the bank robber John Dillinger, who had his A1 model altered into a machine pistol.
Then the Second World War came, and the United States of American decided to convert into an “arsenal of democracy”. This made hundreds of civilian factories transform into facilities for war-production. 1911A1 pistols were banned from being produced by any private gun company, and the ones that were already made were seized out.
These guns, however, were not meant and supplied only the U.S. military, they were also for allied forces and guerillas. Some of them were the British Commonwealth, Canadian, Brazilin, Mexican and Soviet forces. Guns were provided under the Lend-Lease program, which shipped a lot of things abroad, such as fuel and food.
During the following forty years, 1911A1 continued to be used in the American service. It was used in the Korean War, and for interference in Lebanon and the Dominican Republic, as well as the war in Vietnam. It was only replaced as M9 in 1985, by the Beretta 92 pistol. That was the end of the use of 1911, but for its century use, it definitely did an outstanding job.
Nowadays, there is a new generation of polymer firearm that people gravitate to because they are easier to modify with new features and just in general when it came to disassembling the gun. In 2014, however, the Marine Corps wanted M45A1. This gun is based on 1911A1 with some modifications to it, such as night sights and accessory rail.
As you can see the History of the 1911 Pistol is diverse and filled with a lot of war action. Even though it’s not used by the American army at the moment, its spirit hasn’t died.
The Good About 1911
We dug into the origins of this pistol classic, but let’s talk a bit about the good and the bad things about this type of gun. If you would like to learn more about other types of handguns and holsters, make sure to take a look at our page about general holster types.
- The Trigger
If you’ve been in the firearm community for quite a while, you probably have heard the phrase “Nothing beats a 1911 trigger“. The 1911 trigger is well-beloved and known. This hasn’t stopped some competitors to make their way to the market as well.
The description of most the standard 1911 usually goes something like this: crisp, light or sweet. The break, which is the exact moment the hammer is released by the sear and the gun fires, is depicted as breaking a glass rod. That’s because of how clean, prompt and specific it is.
The reset is measured in millimeters, and it entirely depends on the make, customization, and model of the 1911. The amount of pressure needed for one shot can go down to 2-4 pounds is very little. Note that this can be perceived as really dangerous, but if you are a competitive shooter, this is only an advantage to the package.
- The Accuracy
It is debatable whether 1911 can be classified as the most accurate production weapon, and it is quite ambitious to say so. However, it’s hard to deny that the fantastic trigger, the comfortable gun weight, and brilliant long sight radius, can bring the best out of the person who touches this gun.
- The Safety
The original by John Mosses Browning has a few features for safety. Two of them are the thumb and grip safety, which need active disengagement. Now here you’ve got some variety, depending on where you buy your 1911 gun because some manufacturers use and some doesn’t guarantee a third safety. This one originated from Colt and is basically a firing pin block, which was activated by the grip safety. It was later abandoned and resurrected into a trigger activated series 80 firing pin block.
This is one of the weapons with the most customizations available. There are only a few other handguns on the same level. Some of them you can do on your own in your room, such as grip panels and sights. Others, such as ambidextrous thumb safeties, or extended releases and slide stops need to be done professionally by a craftsman. Don’t forget how you will carry it as well, you can always have the best iwb holster if you know what to search for. The material also matters, so even if you go for a 1911 IWB leather holster, bear in mind that there are also some Kydex ones or the cheaper nylon holsters.
As you can imagine, such a popular gun, of course, could be made out of a lot of different things or have different sizes. For instance, the frame can be from alloy or polymer for lightweight. You can also find it in calibers from .22LR to .50Gl.
The Bad About 1911
Now there are some not so good things as well, and here they are:
- The Cost
There is a big difference in the price of low-end 1911s such as Rock Island which is $300 or more. Meanwhile, on average, it would be around $900 if it’s not the best.
- The Capacity
You can actually buy a double stack 1911, but they are tough to find and aren’t known as being that reliable.
- The Safety
You’re probably wondering why we have safety as a disadvantage. Well, that’s because external security isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Some even argue that it can be easily missed during a moment of self-defense. However, there isn’t much evidence to back up this claim. As long as you holster the gun properly, you should be alright. Surprisingly, you might even stumble upon a good appendix carry holster for 1911 though this type of holsters is usually meant for smaller guns.
- The Weight
Weight can be a big factor when deciding a gun, but it’s purely personal. Some people prefer the comfort of a steel, single stack 4inch 1911, some don’t. Both of them have a point but note that this weapon is almost a pound heavier than any other single stack gun with a polymer frame. And thanks to that, it is more of a primary option of a gun instead of a secondary one. This is aided by the fact that secondary weapons are typically holstered at the ankle. It is doubtful that you will be able to fit a 1911 even in the best ankle holster regardless of how good the rig is.
Earlier we mentioned the wide range for 1911, but the tricky thing about this is that the options aren’t always right. Even if you skip the fact that some sellers showcase inferior quality guns, there are still a lot of options to choose from when it comes to grip safety, types of hammer and sights, etc. This can leave the customer really confused and anxious, leading to them buying an unsuitable firearm.
